Wednesday warning: the closure applies to San Callisto only. Domitilla and San Sebastiano close on different days and are both a short walk or bus hop away — transfer tours automatically reroute to Domitilla on Wednesdays.
Timing is everything: when to actually show up
Tours leave roughly every 30 minutes in each language, so you rarely wait long — but group size varies enormously through the day. The quietest departures are the first ones at 09:00 and the slots just after the 14:00 reopening, when the morning coach traffic has moved on to lunch.
The crunch comes between 10:00 and 12:00, when tour buses from the city centre and cruise-excursion groups arrive in waves. Underground, a 40-person group in corridors cut for single-file burials means shuffling and straining to hear the guide. At 09:00 you may share the galleries with a dozen people.
At the other end of the day, treat about 16:30 as the last realistic start. The ticket office stops selling around 16:50, but the tour lasts 40–50 minutes and guides will not begin a full circuit minutes before closing. If your afternoon is running late, switch to the next morning rather than gamble.

Caught by the midday break? Here is what to do
At 12:00 the last morning groups go down and the gates close until 14:00. If you arrive at 12:15 — the classic mistake — you are not stranded, but plan the two hours, because this stretch of the Appia is countryside, not city.
Be warned: lunch options are scarce out here. There are a couple of restaurants along Via Appia Antica, but no supermarkets, no snack kiosks at the site, and nothing fast. Either carry water and something to eat, or budget a proper sit-down lunch at one of the few trattorias near the Quo Vadis crossroads.
Three good ways to spend the break
- Walk to the church of Domine Quo Vadis — about 15 minutes back towards the city, at the spot where, tradition says, Peter met Christ while fleeing Rome. Small, free, and genuinely atmospheric.
- Linger in the catacombs' own grounds — the gated estate around the entrance is a quiet park of cypresses and pines. You can wait out part of the break on the benches near the entrance avenue.
- Walk a stretch of the ancient road — head south past Cecilia Metella onto the basalt-paved section of the Appian Way, where the original Roman stones and ruts are still underfoot.
Then be back at the gate a little before 14:00: the first afternoon departures are among the quietest of the whole day.
Winter break, holidays and the Wednesday workaround
Beyond the weekly rhythm, four closures can wreck an unchecked plan. None of them are negotiable, and one of them lasts a month.

Every year the catacombs close for roughly four weeks of maintenance and conservation. Holiday closures
Three fixed days: 1 January, Easter Sunday and 25 December. Note that Easter Monday — a big sightseeing day in Rome — is a normal opening day, and it gets busy accordingly.
Your Wednesday plan B
If Wednesday is your only window for the Appia, you still have excellent options within walking distance. The galleries hold a constant ~16 °C in August and in December alike, so there is no “best season” underground: summer heat is irrelevant once you descend, and winter tours run exactly as in July. What the season changes is the journey — in summer, take a morning slot so the bus ride and the walk from the stop happen before the afternoon heat, and carry water, because the Appia has little shade.
