Before you book

The one thing to know: entry is guided-only

Unlike the Colosseum or the Vatican, you cannot wander the Catacombs of San Callisto on your own. Every ticket is a guided visit — the underground labyrinth has 20 km of tunnels on four levels, and groups leave roughly every 30 minutes in each language. That means the real choice is not “ticket or tour”, but which tour format fits your day.

Why this site of all Rome's catacombs

What makes San Callisto worth your underground hour

Rome has more than sixty catacombs, five open to visitors — and San Callisto is the one archaeologists call the official cemetery of the early Church. Established in the 2nd century along the Appian Way, it grew into the largest Christian burial complex in the city: around half a million tombs cut into soft volcanic tufa.

Two stops on the tour justify the trip alone. The Crypt of the Popes, nicknamed “the little Vatican”, held nine 3rd-century popes; their Greek epitaphs are still set in the walls. Next door lies the crypt of St. Cecilia, patron saint of music, marked by a copy of Stefano Maderno's famous sculpture of the martyred saint.

Between the crypts, your guide walks you past the Cubicles of the Sacraments, whose 3rd-century frescoes are a visual dictionary of early Christian symbols — the fish, the anchor, the Good Shepherd, the dove. You will see the originals; photography is not permitted, so our gallery of archival images is the way to preview them.

Inside the catacombs

Know what you are looking at before you descend

A catacomb tour moves fast in dim corridors. Ten minutes of reading beforehand turns “old tunnels” into a legible story of persecution, burial and early Christian art.

San Callisto in context: the wider catacomb landscape

Choosing between San Callisto, San Sebastiano, Domitilla or Priscilla? Confused about whether the Vatican has catacombs at all? These guides map the whole underground scene, so you spend your limited Rome days in the right tunnels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I visit the Catacombs of San Callisto without a guide?
No. Entry is only possible with an official guide — there is no self-guided option. The ticket price always includes the tour, which runs about 40–50 minutes in English, Italian, Spanish, French or German.
How much do tickets to San Callisto cost?
At the door the official price is €10 full and €7 reduced (children 7–16, some student categories); children under 6 enter free (source: official site catacombesancallisto.it). Booking online through Tiqets costs from €15 and locks in a timed slot with a guide in your language.
What day are the catacombs closed?
Every Wednesday, all year. They also close on 1 January, Easter Sunday, 25 December, and for an annual winter break from mid-January to mid-February. Check the opening hours page before you plan.
Are the catacombs suitable for people with claustrophobia or mobility issues?
The galleries are narrow, about 20 m underground, reached by stairs — there are no lifts, and wheelchairs cannot be accommodated. The temperature is a constant ~16 °C. If tight underground spaces are a problem, consider the above-ground Appian Way instead.
Can I take photos inside?
No — photography is prohibited inside all Roman catacombs to protect the frescoes. Our photo page shows archival images of what you will see.
How long does a visit take?
The guided tour lasts about 40–50 minutes. With the walk from the bus stop and the wait for your language slot, plan roughly 1.5–2 hours door to door.
Which is better: San Callisto or the other Rome catacombs?
San Callisto is the largest complex and the only one with the Crypt of the Popes. Domitilla keeps an underground basilica, San Sebastiano has pagan mausoleums. Our comparison guide breaks it down.
